cleaning a wool rug

Hi
I have a 100% wool rug which is in a corner with a coffee table on so I hadn't noticed that my pup had been peeing on it until I smelled it
Judging from the stains underneath she may have peed quite a few times. It's quite new and was expensive so I'd like to try and save it. I'm thinking of dousing it in a bio soap powder and water mix then hosing it off and letting it dry over a few days draped over the line as the weather looks good.
unless you wise peeps have any better ideas?

If it is 100% if you wash it in any way it will shrink and the colours will run. It either needs professionally cleaning or (if still wet which I presume it isnt) put talcum powder and salt onto it to draw out the smell and the stain. If it is completley dry then try a small area with the above ingredients and lightly spray with water first. If no running or shrinkage then continue. To stop your dog weeing on it in the future use lavender oil in a spray distilled with water (this will also stop moths).
Good luck!!
Just re read your note please do not hose it down it will absorb its own weight in water like a sheep and will take about a week to dry. I know cos I tried it with a vintage rag rug made of wool last year and it is still not dry!!0 -
Thanks for the advice seashore. I have a day off tomorrow so will I'll give it a whirl. I won't hose it down if it'll still be wet in a year! I'll just try to dampen it slightly. I also have a small hand held carpet cleaner (like a dustbuster but for spills) so that will come in handy. Not too bothered about shrinkage (it's really quite big) and its different shades of swirly red patterns so colour run wouldn't be too noticeable.
I've nothing to lose really as it's destined for the bin at the mo. I'll let u know how it goes.
edited to say: thanks for the tip re: lavender I'll try that too to stop her being naughty.......would this stop her scratching doors?0
