Digestion - detox cleansing herbal pills?

Options
I want to try some herbal digestion/cleanse pills, trying to do some research online what is available and what works, maybe some good combination of senna and some root extracts. Any advice please?

Or cut out the junk food, booze and caffeine, eat properly and drink just tap water.
It'll work much better and save you a fortune.

  • I have been using these herbal tablets from america called Dr schulze intestinal formula 1. I have tried quite a few different products over the years and these are by far the best. Not easy to get hold of but seen someone selling them on ebay. Definitely worth the money if you want something that works.

No evidence of any medical benefit to 'detox'/ 'cleanse' pills and potions, stimulant laxatives like senna are not recommended to be used regularly because you risk tolerance ('lazy bowel' and rebound constipation) and electrolyte imbalances. The main time senna is prescribed regularly are in the very sedentary elderly folks in hospitals or care homes with chronic constipation, and even then not as first line. Another group who use such products regularly are those with disordered eating, not really a group you want to be in. :(

The human body 'detoxes' and 'cleanses' itself on a daily basis or we would be very sick or dead: we have a number of organs involved in that process including the skin, liver, kidneys, bladder and bowel. To help those organs function optimally eat a balanced nutritious diet, lose the added sugars, refined carbs, added fats, salty foods, basically anything highly processed or junky.

Eat much more oily fish, fruit and veggies, fibre rich wholefoods like nuts and seeds (especially ground flax or chia), drink plenty of fluids like water or green tea. Also be physically active, at least the recommended 10,000 steps a day because the rhythmic movement of muscles stimulates the bowel, circulation and lymphatic systems.

You might ask a pharmacist or your GP about a course of freeze dried probiotics (friendly bacteria, eg. acidophilus) as the gut flora plays a key role in digestive health and form part of the immune system. Some herbal remedies do have interesting effects but they do not all suit all people so read the published studies not cranky alternative websites or sales pitches. Particularly check with a pharmacist or your GP before taking herbal supplements if you have any diagnosed health problems even minor ones are on any medication, including hormonal contraception.

What FireFox said. Healthy bodies don't need their digestive systems to be "detoxed" or cleansed. Our bodies are quite capable of doing those on their own without any intervention from us.

Drink enough water and ensure you eat sufficient roughage and things will take care of themselves by themselves.

Agree with the past two posts: if your body isn't detoxing itself properly, your best of seeing a Doctor! Most of the time all the expensive potions and pills get destroyed by the Ph2 (very very very acidic) stomach acid, the rest goes through other organs before the waste is transferred and pushed out of you.

You cannot regenerate your liver if it is full of toxins, it just isn't possible: if it was they'd not bother with the liver transplant list and just give ex-alcoholics who had long term severe damage a few pots of detox pills rather then advising them to join up to a list and eat and drink healthily! If it were so easy to repair your liver the NHS would be saving huge amounts of money but as I'm sure you know well: the NHS does not prescribe detox pills.
