Joining Police with less then good credit history....Please Help! :-)

Options
Hey all,

Im after some advice if possible......(dont know if this is the right forum!)

Ive started my application to join the police, but during my younger years i was very very irresponsible when it came to debt....This mostly included overdrafts, credit cards, mobile contracts, and all other thing bill wise...

I never paid anything back and evaded balifs etc and eventually everything went quiet and now all but a few things have fell off my credit file and are not statute barred...

However i am now a changed man! I have paid all bills since this turning point and am wanting to join the police.

I visited credit expert, filled in the forms and found out that 3 things from 2009/2010 are on my credit record as "default" this includes x2 mobile phone contracts and also a bank account that i left £30 overdrawn and, and because of letters sent etc etc it defaulted and stands at £650 (a rather expensive £30 i think!).....none of them have had payments of contact with me for about 4 years.

There was also a joint judgement CCJ with the ex that was from water company for an old address (which i knew nothing about).

When i found out the above i rang up Northampton County Court, gave them the ref number of the CCJ and they gave me the details of who was owed. I paid it that day (£156) and they said they will send me a cert of satisfaction via the post. (this was last week)

Im not on the electrol roll either, and its flagging up this, however for some strange reason its giving me a "fair" credit score of 805.

What it says in my credit summery is:

Number of credit accounts (including those settled) 5
Amount of available credit (excluding mortgages) £0
% of your total credit being used (excluding mortgages) 0%
Amount of outstanding debt (excluding mortgages) £0
Number of accounts overdue 0
Number of missed or late repayments in the last year 0

(which i dont understand as arnt the defaulted records overdue?)

I dont know whether to contact the 3 other people thats on my credit record and ask them if either
a) they would except a massive reduced Full and Final
b) ask them if they would accept £1-£5 a week or
c) do nothing?

also if i do pay, will people who i owed money for over 6 years jump on the band wagon and try to hound me?

i dont know whats the best option, or if my credit record will go against me as im trying to get into the police.

also the 3 debts that i owe come to £1500 total so its not massive money.

thank you in advance

liam

I have to be honest, as part of the application to become a Police Office they do credit check you and adverse credit *can* affect your application.

If you have a CCJ that is a problem. Don't know if it makes a difference that you have paid it or not. But that's the one thing that will automatically rule you out. I would ask them.
    Waste not, want not!

  • Which Police force is this :-)
  • well the CCJ will be satisfied and apparently thats ok? im more concerned about the other debts.

on the application form it asks if you have had any CCJs and if they are now paid and satisfied.

im just really gutted its there, as i never even knew about it until last week! :-(

I'm only aware of Avon & Somerset opening recently, so I can only presume.

    They are now however, closed.

    Financial Vetting

    Policy

    1. Regulation 6, and Schedule 1, paragraph 4 of the Police Regulations 2003 states that a member of a police force shall not wilfully refuse or neglect to discharge any lawful debt.

    2. All members of the Police Service are in a privileged position with regard to access to information and could be considered potentially vulnerable to corruption.

    3. Applicants to the Police Service should normally be free from undischarged debt or liability and able to manage existing loans. The emphasis should be on sensible management of debt.

    4. This policy should sit alongside the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) National Vetting Policy for the Police Community and police force vetting policies and procedures.

    Guidance

    5. Applicants who have existing County Court Judgments (CCJs) outstanding against them should not be considered.

    6. Applicants who have discharged County Court Judgments should be considered.

    7. Applicants who are the subject of a current Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) should not be considered.

    8. Applicants who have been registered bankrupt and their bankruptcy debts have not been discharged should not be considered.

    9. Applicants who have been registered as bankrupt and their bankruptcy debts have been discharged should not be considered until three years after the discharge of the debt.

    10. For the purposes of police recruitment, former Directors of limited companies which have become insolvent and who apply to the police force should be treated as if they were bankrupt even though the debts are in the name of the company.

    11. Where debts are declared, the financial vetting check should be made at the start of the recruitment process. Otherwise, it may be conducted post assessment but prior to appointment.

    12. Careful consideration should be given when a Credit Reference Check reveals applicants have defaulted accounts.

Speak to recruitment, they are a lot more knowledgable than a random cross section of Internet forum posters.

You will certainly need to provide a certificate of satisfaction for the CCJ though.

If you look at some of the stories in the news these days you could make chief constable...
