Got New Job- When To Resign Current Post

I have been in my current job 9 weeks, quite early on I decided it wasn't for me and started to look for something else. I went for an interview yesterday and received a call today offering me the job subject to references. The start date given in June 11th.

I now have the dilema of when to hand in my notice. I have not received a contract of employment from them so unsure if they will hold me to a months notice or let me go when I want. Of course as the new job start date is some time off I have no problem working the month but am a little concerned that they may just say go now. This would of course leave me the best part of a month with no pay. The best scenario for me is to work till the end of this month then take a week off with the 5 days holiday pay I will have accrued.

Can anyone offer me any advice on this please?

How long would it take to recruit someone to replace you? If it is likely to take a month to do so and you are not falling down on the job, then it is unlikely that an employer would ask you to leave earlier than the expiry of the notice you give them.

Exceptions would be if you were privy to extremely confidential commercial information which they would not want you to take or if they thought there was a likelihood of your doing some kind of sabotage.

If your job offer is subject to references, do not hand in your notice. Wait till they confirm they have received the satisfactory references. Presumably you will have had to give your current employer as one of your referees so that will alert them to your wish to leave in any case.

The amount of time left till you would be starting your new job is not very long and I think that, unless one of the exceptions applies, you can give them as much notice as you are able, once you have the firm job offer.
