How do I find out quickly?

My husband has just found out there is a minor default in his name registered this year. I took out a experian file in our names which showed up nothing. But this default has stopped us getting a 100% mortgage and we can pay the default off immediately. But my husband has no idea where this default has come from and is genuinely puzzled by it. Even i dont recall it (it's for a mail order). He hasnt even had anything through the post to tell him of any outstanding payments. How can we find out quickly what it is and pay it if it is genuine? We desperately want this mortgage and have been advised if we pay this default, it shouldnt be a problem.
Thanks
Thanks

There are three main agencies
You also need http://www.equifax.co.uk/contact.html
and
http://www.callcredit.co.uk/home
If that does not work, ask the mortgage cmpany where they got the information? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thankyou. I'll have a look. The mortgage company would not tell me due to data protection!0

Under the Data protection Act, you are entiteled to request every bit of information that a company holds on you, written of electronic format. Since it releates to hubby, they may not pass it to you, but they must tell him
if they refuse, offer to report them to the Data Information Ombudsman or whatever s/he is called and watch them jump.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thanks for your advice. Hubby rang the mortgage people and they gave him a number of a company called Banana
who apparently can tell him what he needs to know. He's going to call asap tomorrow. 0
