in Cutting tax
Hi,
I am hoping someone could shed some light here as i'm a bit confused. I work full- time for a business which have 2 offices. Most of the times I'm in the 1st location, but I am being send to the 2nd location which is 16 miles return trip every other Wednesday. I am not paid any mileage or any extras for doing so, so I was wondering if i would be entitled to claim business mileage for this? In my contract it specifies that I am contracted to work in both locations.
Thank you

Do you mean that you want to claim from your employer?
If so, it all depends on your contract - if it says you are contracted to both locations, then you probably can't claim anything.
If you mean that you want to claim from HMRC, in which case it would only be for tax releif on the cost of travel, at your tax rate, that looks like it's out too - see links

Edit - when i read the post I thought it was every wednesday, and I assumd it was contractual, but if it's not a contractual requirement you'd probably be able to claim tax relief - assuming you travel by car it'd be at 45p per mile, than applied to your tax rate.
A contractual requirement of 1 day every other week might be viewed as temporary location, but it depends on the actual contract requirements.
If HMRC accepted it, it would be: 16 miles x 45p = £7.20, applied to 20% tax rate = £1.44
Basically the taxman would refund you £1.44 for each time you had to go to the other location.0 -
Thanks for your reply, I cannot claim anything from my employer and I wasn't sure if I could claim from the tax man as I could not find anything to guide me.
Reading through the links posted I am still unclear re: permanent location or temp but it is a bit early so not awake properly. Also anyone knows which form to use to try and claim and when can i do it?

If your contract states that your place of work is both locations, then you are not entitled to tax relief on the miles as it is your "normal" place of work.Sealed Pot Challenge #239
