Former Bankruptcy Job Advise

Hi i wonder if someone could please give me a bit of advise. I was made bankrupt in 2004 and discharged a year later in 2005. Since then i have a totally clean credit file with no debts or money problems of any kind.

I have just been offered a job working for a bank. The query i have is on the application form one of the questions asks if you are or have ever been bankrupt. The job i have been offered is just a basic Clerical/Office based role, nothing involving money or anything. What i would like to know is should i tick yes or no. Should i be honest and say yes (which is what im likely to do) or do i just put no there is no longer any reference of bankruptcy on my credit file as it was 7 years ago.

Does anyone know if i will have any problems?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You have to answer honestly, sorry but if asked you have to say yes.

Banks may do checks, your BR will still be showing in the London Gazette.

I'm not sure is lying on such a form would have any legal ramifications, you would if on a mortgage application, as you would be receiving something on false information i.e a mortgage, not sure if receiving a job on false information is illegal?

You would be commiting fraud, a jailable offence.
  • I will be honest and answer correctly but do you think its going to cause me any problems?

A chance you won't get the job but it is by no means certain you won't get it, some jobs disallow BR from working there totally , some only want to know, I don't think working for a bank is disallowed if ever BR, so it's just down to if the bank itself allow it, they may just be asking so they are totally aware of the situation.

Is it only me that sees the irony here? A bank asking if you have ever been declared bankrupt.

Presumably it doesn’t count if the government bales you out.

very good point, bet they don't have to declare their BR status each time they go to the markets.
