Adding learner driver to insurance

OK I have plodded along renewing my car insurance year after year making sure I get the best price and it's due for renewal at the end of April as usual.
Today though I rang to see how much it would be to add my 24 yr old daughter to the insurance. She is finally learning to drive.
I thought it will be expensive but she's 24 so possibly not as much of a risk as a 17 year old.
However they said they wouldn't cover anyone with a provisional license. So I'll wait until renewal time and shop around then but is this the norm?

  • We had the same problem when our son was learning and my sister also had this problem, seems insurance companies don't like provisional drivers.
We couldn't add our son so he ended up with provisional marmalade for cover for our car while he was learning.
We live in Scotland but thought I would comment anyway.

It's 10 years since my eldest learnt to drive and we had no problem adding her on except it was expensive. I was shocked when our insurer said their underwriters won't insure learners.

Hi, I've been looking for the same for my 17 year old son (not pushing too hard though as I was getting quotes in the £2,500 range). If you're a civil servant and a member of the NI Civil Service Sports Association, you can access the insurance services they provide. I was quoted £1,600 for my son (and me) to drive my wee car but the best part - it won't increase after he passes his test! I think they said the policy was underwritten by AXA so you could try them - although you may not get the same rate as it could be a special negotiated by the provider. Good Luck!

My insurer Churchill allowed me to add my daughter as a provisional driver, it did cost £1000 for 9 months though, which was three months ago

My son was learning the end of last year and when he had booked his test we got him insurance to drive our car, so he could get out more the few weeks before his test, he did a separate learners insurance to be able to drive our car as our insurers wouldn't insure him being 17, can't for the life of me remember who it was, think we just googled learners insurance it cost £80 for the month,
I do think it helped as he passed first time, and now costs £2500 for his insurance on a T reg corsa,
Dont forget that little Thanks button , only takes a sec

We have a 17 yo son who is learning to drive. He has his own car (£600 wee peugot bought from relative). We checked comparison websites and they gave us Collingwood too. The car is insured under sons name with his dad also on it. 3rd party fire and theft. It was £100+ the first month and it is £58 each month thereafter. Also as a bonus we bought through the compare the market website and got a Meerkat toy!!!! LOL :)

Once we get past the magic age of 4-0 we are no longer considered boy or girl racers :o I got added to my parents insurance to drive their car for a month for free last year, I was nearly offended they considered me no risk :rotfl:

This issue is a minefield and will only get worse with insurance (and whiplash claims) on the rise in recent years. Anyone considering it should check with Direct Line insurance as they give all named drivers a No Claims bonus, may help our young ones a bit when they have to take out their own insurance in the future.

My first years insurance 22 years ago cost £250 more than I paid for my first car :rotfl:
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

His car was an Focus ST, mine a 1 litre corsa. Then mine broke and had to be fixed so I had to drive his for three days, on my R plates, and every boy racer in the area decided I was fair game

Popped out for a packet of fags from the end of the road, and ended up in the Port :rotfl:

    Now I'm older and wiser I don't smoke ;)
