Council tax advice

We owe £491 on our council tax for this year. We have to pay the full amount or we get a magistrates summons. I rang to say we can't pay thàt in full and could we set up a payment plan. They said no we must pay the full amount. The only way we can set up a repayment plan is once we've had the summons and this adds a further £90 to our account! I've told them we want the repayment plan but until we get the summons we can't have one so they make a further £90 from this.....is there no way round this? Thanks for any advice.

The council are correct, at this stage they are under no obligation to accept anything other than full payment.

At this stage they will obtain the liability order in order that they can secure the debt against any future default, its standard practice.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Even if they are correct nothing to stop you making the payment you can afford at this time. You owe the money and have to pay it one way or another.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
