Valentine, Mother's Day comps after the event

I've noticed over the last couple of years that many competitions for a specific event such as Valentine's Day or Easter have the closing date after the actual event.
Surely if they are running a competition to win flowers for Mother's Day the website would have the competition to finish before the event?

I've found another I can never understand. When they offer DVD's or CD as prizes. Especially after the DVD etc's been on sale for a couple of weeks. I mean say you wanted the new James Bond film on DVD. Do you think I'll buy the DVD or do I hop I win it?
If the prize is a DVD/CD then why not have the competition to finish before the film etc comes out?0
