When to tell job centre you are starting work?

hi,
i am due to sign on next monday.
i usually get my jsa paid on thursday 4 days later, for the previous 2 week period of looking for work.
but i have now been offered a full time job starting monday 11 march!
when do i tell the job centre? i am worried as soon as they know i start work on monday 1th, they will close my claim down immediately "as you have to be looking for work to get jsa paid". fair enough, but that doesn't take into account peoples difficult financial circumstances.
but i won't get my first months wage until 15th april....
if the jsa dont pay me anything from monday 4th when i tell them, i will be totally skint and really struggle with my rent etc.
i can't say i will look for work until friday 8th march then they can close my claim as
a) they won't believe me
b) i will have no incentive to look for a job when i am about to start one.
sorry if this seems obvious.
anyone else recently stopped signing on and got a full time job?
please advise / help asap.
do i have to tell the council tax & housing benefit people too, or do the job centre (dwp) do that for me? like i said, i know i will go back to paying full rent, but i won't get my first wage for over 5 weeks, assuming i "sign off" next monday....
thanks for reading.

It is up to you when you tell them (the latest date being your start date), but you do need to continue to seek work until you sign off. It is also good practice to do so anyway, what would happen if your new job gets pulled before you start?0

thanks.
so if i did tell them when i signed on next monday, they would sign me "off" there and then?
i guess the jsa payment i would receive on the thursday would be from the last 2 weeks monday to monday anyway, but then i would still have to find the money for the rent for next monday to friday myself, which i can't. i only pay a bit due to h/b benefits i do recieve - but still have to pay £20 myself a week due to my last jobs redundancy pay out (small as it was).
and the council tax and h/b aren't going to pay me surely for all of next week, but then again, I don't actually start working until the 11th!
guess it just means i'd lose one week of £71 jsa then if i signed off next monday?0 -
Tell them on 10 March because meantime you are still actively seeking employment in case the job falls through. Do not give them any reason to stop your money because you need it get through your first month. If you have been out of work for 26 weeks you will also receive a back to work payment, however this is being stopped on 1st April 2013. I got it last year and it was £250.00. Congratulations of the job! Well done you!.0

They would only end your claim if you stop seeking work. Continue to seek work and your entitlement will not cease until you start work.0 -
thanks ditzyat50
good post that, but 10th march is a sunday.
can you tell them you are starting work the next day and they just accept that?
what if they want proof of when you accepted the job.
i was told by email 4 days again, monday. have emailed back my paperwork today as the offer only stands until monday 4th march.
and believe me, i will be nervous enough about starting a new job the day before without having to speak to anyone from the dwp again!
i cant wait to stop signing on, the job centre and staff is/are so life draining its unreal. i have only been out of work a few months so wont get any financial help.0 -
*major spanner in works*
forgot to say the job centre rang saying i need to see an adviser tomorrow as i haven't granted access to my online univeral job match (ujm) account and they need to see proof of my applications, which I have put down as activities on my jsa account, and have also printed out.
do i go and just bite my tongue as they try and get me to apply for this job on minimum wage or that job on peanuts?
i just want out, but was also going to ring up and cancel my appointment as i am signing on next monday.
i know most people would say just go tomorrow, but i want to take my partner out to celebrate. i was meant to go this morning but they phoned me up as the adviser was off sick, so i stupidly accepted tomorrow.
wish i had cancelled it or said i can't make it tomorrow, but dont bite the hand that feeds etc etc.

Attend if you want to be paid, don't attend if you don't want to be.
I hope your new job doesn't involve decision making!0 -

Tell them on the day you actually go into work for the first time, either on a break or after you finish.
I say this, because I told them in advance when I was due to start, and that start date got put back at short notice, but it was too late for JS and I had to reclaim which was just irritating.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

so they closed your claim down straight away, even though you had a few days before you were due to start a new job?
so in my case, they would cut all entitlement to jsa next monday - if thats when i sign on for the last time and tell them?0
