I will never buy mince from a supermarket again.
I bought some from our local butchers and the difference when I ate mine tonight with mash, veg and yorkshire puds was amazing.

i've been thinking recently whether to have a weekly visit to my butcher, think i will go have a recce this week.
I'd want about 500g mince, 6 sausages,2 chicken breasts thats all really.
how do prices compare to supermarkets?LIVE SIMPLY * GIVE MORE * EXPECT LESS * BE THANKFUL0 -
I can't help on the price as I haven't been into a supermarket to look. What I will say is that it will be much better quality, so will stretch further. I almost never buy chicken breasts as they are expensive, dry out more easily and don't have as much taste as chicken thighs.
Ironically some smaller butchers don't stock chicken thighs because of poor demand (but ask, a lot do!)
I also find that at a butchers you can get cheaper cuts, just as you want them. In a supermarket they often don't have cheaper cuts (or only the newly fashionable therefore creeping up in price!) and you can't get just what you want.
My butcher cuts the exact size of brisket, skirt or shoulder that I want.0 -
our local butcher - steak mince £9.99/5lb and free range chicken breast fillets £13.99/5lb (usually 12 no) and sausages £6.75-6.95/kg. 5 sausages usually £2.50-3.00.
Mince very little fat and minced by the butcher so no added extra ingredients.
Chicken shrinks a small amount but nothing like the stuff from a supermarket.
Sausages - made by the butcher and again little fat residue in the pan after cooking.
We always shopped at Morrisons where we used to live as the meat was very good or so we thought (certainly better than the other supermarkets). But since moving we use one of the 2 local butchers generally and very occasionally buy meat in a supermarket but are often disappointed by the supermarket meat but the butchers can't compete on price with the supermarket specials.
Just eaten a Finest burgar that we had in the freezer, it was OK, quite tasty but greasy and the fat in the pan looks disgusting They were 75p each, our local butcher is 80p each and again handmade on the premises.
For me its the butchers every time, and they can tell you where everything has come from.0 -
Couldnt have put it better meself Ian,
I dont mind paying a little more for the quality.
Same as bread, I love a good old crusty loaf, mmmm, make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

The only price I know at our local butcher is that their chicken breasts are £1 each or 6 for £5. But we do buy mince, casserole steak, topside joints, and local sausages there too
I would agree that the texture and flavour is far superior to the supermarket. :heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

I have to say that I have been slowly changing the way that I shop over the last few months, even before the whole horsemeat thing I was beginning to question the quality of the supermarket meat.
The 3 for £10 offers in my opinion are not really that good value the mince is not great quality, the chickens are tiny and things like sausages tend to be very poor quality.
I have started using my local market once a week where I get fresh baked bread rolls, fantastic bacon like it used to be without all the added water, fresh fish and fishcakes,
I have been using the butcher and the mince is lovely, the stewing steak is really good not all scrappy little bits like you get from the supermarkets, the sausages are made on the premises as are the burgers and they do a great selection of pies and pasties all made there.
I would estimate that I probably spend about the same as before as you need less per person because it is not filled with water etc the way the supermarket meat is.
I have also just discovered a veg box deliver service local to me so I am going to give ha a go as well.1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480

hi,
we stopped using beef mince ages ago as my darling monsters hate the grizzly bits! We have been using turkey mince instead, as not only lower fat, it has no grizzly bits and was cheaper, have noticed in the last few weeks the cost is going up!!
