Thanks for that.

We were in Croatia when you posted this and didn't have any language difficulties as everyone, even small children and elderly people in remote villages, spoke English - embarassing when you think that we expect everyone else to make the effort. Our guide on one of the trips switched constantly between English, German and then added in Dutch when she realised a couple from the Netherlands were out with us for the day, and that was when she was answering questions too, not just giving us the prepared text.

As we are going back asap, when we have enough leave from work and have saved for it, this will come in really useful as all we had this time were a couple of phrases off the BBC's website and in Croatia things just don't sound like they read! Caused a few chuckles and at least we didn't pronounce anything offensive, but they did appreciate us trying to make the effort.

Thanks again - hubby is taking me to Venice in November for a special birthday so will have a bash at the Italian one too.....
