in Cutting tax
I am new the MSE, so Hi everyone. My apologies if this is a repeat of a previous but I have recently been told I have to start Self Assessment, and want to know what I can claim for on this. I am currently employed and get taxed through PAYE. I work from home most of the week, and my company do not pay me any expenses for home working other than mobile phone, and fuel costs for work (although not the full 40p per mile etc).
What am I able to offset on my Self Assesment, anyone let me know?
Thanks

You can claim the difference between the 40p per mile you claim and the 45p per mile that HMRC allow (assuming under 10,000 business miles per year).
If your employer requires you to work from home, you can claim £4 per week towards your home expenses. If it's your choice that you work from home, you can't claim.
Just out of interest, why and who has told you that you need to complete self assessment tax returns. You can claim these simple expenses by a mere letter or phone call to HMRC.0 -
Thanks for your reply, I was told I need to do Self Assessment because of my earnings in the current financial year. Is this not correct? I told the HMRC I stopped my Child Benefit so perhaps this is why?0
