Change in HMRC law?

Hi, I have just had a very interesting conversation with a friend of mine. Her employers want to change the date they are being paid and have claimed that there has been a change in HMRC law that means everyones payday will be changed to the 1st of the month. I havent heard about this so I wondered if it were true. Has anyone heard about this?
TIA
C

My son was paid each month on the first. His HR wrote to him along with all other employees and gave a months notice that their pay would be on the 10th of each month. Pain in the bum as all direct debits etc come out on the first also. So I would think that your company would give you notice of this if it was true.

    Not true.

There have been some changes to the PAYE reporting systems employers have to use with the HMRC, and that might mean that for this company it's easier for them to have a payment date of the 1st of each month. But that's their own internal decision, nothing to do with HMRC. there is definitely no compulsory salary payment date. But maybe your friend misunderstood the information, her employer was telling her they are making the change to enable them to comply with the PAYE changes at HMRC , not that the HMRC enforce a certain date. So it's sort of because of the HMRC, but only because that's how the company has chosen to deal with it.

  • Given that HMRC themselves pay their staff on the last working day of the month, your friend probably got the wrong end of the stick.

His employers may have been referring to Real Time Information (RTI), which will increase and probably complicate the companies payroll, which may cause them to make changes internally. But HMRC themselves don't mandate a specific pay date.
