Why not just put the concerns in writing to the employee and ask for a meeting or at least a response?
tell the employee that she now needs to give notice of being unavailable for work at least 3 ' working days' before she is due to go on shift to enable her employer to gain cover.
Point out in the letter that the employee is not responding to phone calls. If this is put in writing your Mum has evidence that she has tried to be more than reasonable.
If she refuses to respond then your Mum is totally within her right to assume that her employee no longer wants to be employed and I would terminate her employment in writing .
Make sure the required notice period and any holiday owed is paid.
  • The two years requirement is for those where employment began on or after 6 April 2012. If the employee began working before then, they would only need a year's employment to avoid a potential unfair dismissal claim.

In the OP's first post they state the employee has only been working there since October 2012
Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked

I would terminate her employment anyway once I had sent her the letter and if it had been ignored.
The employee is being unreasonable but the employer really needs to look at their documented disciplinary procedure.

    Advice?

Your mum needs to get herself up to speed on employment legislation... now she is an employer.
