Ive got a little hinari one that my Mom bought me for christmas, think she got it in woolworths I know it was £9.99 as she left the price ticket on it:rotfl:
I used mine yesterday to make my tea for when I get in, I had a SLI (Sarahs latest invention) LOL which consited of using up all the left overs in the fridge
I slung in
1 chicken breast
1 carrot sliced
1 sweet potato cubed
half a tin of toms
a squirt of tom puree ( I love toms)
1 leek sliced
and a pinch of dried mixed herbs
I thought it was yummy and had it with some rice (which I guess I could have put in the slow cooker along with the rest of the stuff but I cooked seperatly when i got in from work)
so you can pretty much make it up as you go along
I tend to use normal oven type recipes and just reduce some of the liquid content so its not to runny so pretty much everything can be made in a slow cookerJune Grocery Challenge 270.80/250July Grocery Challenge 0/3000 -
I was just about to start a thread on slow cookers then noticed this one!
I want to buy a slow cooker but am really worried about putting it on in the morning and leaving it on all day long while there is no one in the house, I presume you all do this and it's ok?? I also presume the stuff inside the SC doesn't burn? Can you tell I'm new to all this :rotfl:
Also, what size SC should I buy? There's 5 of us, 2 adults and 3 kids (although eldest dd eats like a man lol!).
Thanks for your help!

I would go for a 3.5l slow cooker minimum for five people - I have a Morphy Richards one and it's 3.5l. That does around 6 portions of stew/meat/soup etc
They are perfectly safe to leave all day...and no they don't boil dry. All the liquid is retained so what ever liquid you put in your slow cooker to start with you end up with.
They are so good for putting on before you go to work and coming home to a hot, ready cooked, tasty meal.0 -
where is the other thread?0

Thanks for those ideas, they are great to get me started.
Although there was a manual with my cooker there was no recipe suggestion or anything like that in it so this will be helpful for me.
There are loads of great recipes in the mega index sticky but they are generally for huge servings of 6-8. I will have a dabble with some of the easier basic ones like the casserole above to get me started.

Jo.
When I first bought my SC, this was one of my worries, so, when I was out all day I would leave it on, plugged in to a power breaker.
Now that I have been using a SC for a while, I don't even think about it. Surprisingly, I think the slow cooker is one thing in the kitchen I would really miss if I didn't have it.

I love my SC for soups, I always make extra and bottle them up in some plastic containers and freeze. A thick veggie soup with crusty bread is very filling, and a lot more wholesome than the tinned stuff. I now make extra soups for my DD's as they no longer like the insipid stuff that you buy in the supermarkets .
Its so easy and if you havn't a book check out the library. They usually have some really good soup books to borrow .I always adapt them to suit myself .But if you buy some country mix from Tesco's or split peas this will help to make you soups nice and thick.0 -
I think the one disadvantage with slow cookers is if you like Pasta then you can not do all in one pasta dishes in it.:beer:0

Thanks.
I also pop my cut up potatoes in the slow cooker with whatever I'm having so its only one pot to clean0
