Birthday banana cake help

I have been asked to make a birthday cake for my soon-to-be 3 year old granddaughter's birthday party.
I thought I would make a banana cake as it is liked by everyone and it should freeze well.
Do you think it would be OK to add chocolate drops to the mixture to give the cake a bit of a WOW factor?
My daughter in law will be doing the top icing decorations but I shall be making a cream cheese icing type of filling for between the top and bottom halves.
I am not experienced at cake making and feel quite chuffed that I've been asked to make the cake, but should appreciate any tips.
Thanks.
Sally

Nigella reckons chocolate chips are a perfectly reasonable addition, so that's good enough for me! She also mentions (in Domestic Goddess) using cocoa in place of about a quarter of the flour if you'd rather do it that way.
Enjoy your baking! They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

Thanks for your encouraging replies.
Chocolate fudge icing sounds great, but there are so many different
versions of this recipe.
Any favourites please? I shall be making the cake tomorrow.
Thanks.
