pension decisions

Hi,
Can anyone share their thoughts on a personal pension vs low-cost SIPP for someone in their late 30s, in self-employment? Starting with 10k-ish lump sum, then monthly payments of up to £400 or so.
Personal pension would be from Cavendish Online - not sure which one. Am also open to a stakeholder but understand that personal pensions can be better and lower cost.
SIPP (from HL or similar) would probably initially be based solely around a Vanguard Lifestrategy option as I've currently limited investment knowledge and want to minimise costs.
I've a couple of (small) previous pensions from previous jobs but am not currently looking at moving them.
Thanks in advance for any comments!
