Offered P/T Work

Please could some kind person give me some advice?

I retired from work 5 years ago and have been doing a voluntary 1 to 2 days a week in a local charity shop ever since. I will not receive my works pension until 2017.

OH retired last June and is drawing his works pension.

We both have around 10 years to wait to get our state pensions

As I am not a tax payer all our savings (£85k) ish are in my name

I have now been offered a p/time job with the charity I volunteer with. This will involve covering our manager for her day off, holidays and sickness. So not mega bucks but will come in handy. Plus I feel delighted that they think enough of me to offer me a paid post

As I never intended to go back to paid work, I am a bit out of the loop.

How do I approach the charity to ensure that I do not end up paying tax on my earnings?

I assume that I will pay NI out of these earnings?

Thanks in anticipation for help

  • if your not earning or getting any benefits then i should imagine you will get your tax free allowance, which if you're working a few days a week may mean you wouldn't have to pay tax and would pay minimum national insurance. If you put the hours or amount into www.listentotaxman.com it will tell you how much you will be left with after deductions

As this will be your only job you will have all the allowance on your tax code.

Probably need a P46 on starting for them to get the tax code from HMRC.

if the earnng are low enough there will not be any NI.
(might want to check your state pension forcast)

You will need to check your savings income on top as if you recieve this gross and it takes you over the allowance you will need to do something.

I am expecting that over the year it will be in the region of £3500.00 so hopefully I might just escape paying tax.

it will just be a nice little addition to our nest egg.
