Plastic Bag Free Town

I recently read about one woman's campaign to get Modbury in Devon plastic bag free. It's a six month trial and let's hope it becomes permanent! Here is the full story.

Now I have a slight concern about the reduction of plastic bags - which I hope that you guys can dispell.

I have been told (by the man in the pub) that in Ireland following the bag ban the sales of bin liners have gone through the roof.

The plastic that they use is a higher grade than plastic bags and therefore the doesn't degrade as quickly as the lower grade and uses more resources to make than the cheap plastic bags.

Therefore the overall effect of the ban has been negative.

Now I accept that my source (the man in the pub) isn't the most reliable but there is a logic to it.

    Therefore what are your thoughts?

use newspapers to line your plastic bins, instead of plastic bags!

    'cept in the kitchen bin...

re - dog poo, i'm sure like most people we have tons of plastic bags under the sink to 'use-up'. and you can buy bio-degradable nappy sacks, which would do the job hansomely!

I now have so many... I keep a small one in my handbag, some in the house, some in the car. If I remember to take some out of the house and into the car, that means that when I bring the shopping back into the house, I know there are still more left in there for the next trip!

If I forget, and I'm in a supermarket, I just load things straight into the trolley, then into the back of the car (in which I may have crates or bags anyway).

Mind you, sometimes its useful to have extras - I quite often use them instead of wrapping presents, in the hope that passing them on to other people might encourage them to avoid plastic bags too!
