Leaving home for the first time

I am moving out and going to live by myself for at least 6 months. Has anyone got any advice about looking for rooms to rent? It is a three journey so I can't really go after work and look, I going to take a week off work and look up there to see if I can find somewhere to live. Does anyone know good websites for room rental? Or could give me advice about a time when they moved home and how they found a place to live? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I do not want a long contract as I am a contractor and I could get sacked at anytime without little notice.

Theres a few sites out there (of which i cant currently think of the names), spareroom.co.uk might be 1 of them but check the net for others.

DS2 caught a train to London on a Sunday to live in a hostel, with his new job starting the following Thursday. He had found a room on spareroom by Monday lunchtime, at an astonishingly reasonable rent!

Mind you, it is just a room: the only shared rooms are bathroom and tiny kitchen. But he's happy!
