How much is too much on food? Swap from Ocado

Hello

So we do shop at Ocado and people may scream at me and say it is sooo expensive. However occasionally I compare prices of things we buy frequently with Tescos/Sainsburys and there is usually not much difference or it is up/down either way.

I find the quality of Ocado food excellent and it lasts longer where as I do not find that with tescos.

However we are spending too much a month on food! We do like to eat healthily fish, fruit etc.but we do buy the basics where possible and we never buy anything fancy or alcohol.

I wandered what other people spend of food each week/month for 2 people?

I think we need to plan more and not waste a thing also!

Thanks x

I can shop for myself and daughter who is 12 for about £35 per week, i shop mainly at Aldi but go to Asda for stuff i can't get there. No issues with quality or freshness.

It's worth running an advanced search, this comes up regularly. :) What do you mean by not much difference? 5p or 15p here and there can actually add up to quite a percentage - Tesco are quite expensive these days, try comparing to Aldi, Lidl and Asda.

You might consider shopping around/ alternating, still get the items that really need to be fresh or are your favourite from Ocado, then cheaper longer life items from another store? I got 500ml balsamic vinegar for £1 from Aldi the other day which is half the price of Asda's cheapest and well under a third of the price of Ocado's.

It's also worth looking at exactly what you buy - there is a massive difference in price per kilo from fish to fish or vegetable to vegetable. Frozen and root vegetables are massively cheaper than many fresh fruits, ditto canned fish often being cheaper than fresh. Lastly consider your serving sizes of meat and fish, many of us eat double or even triple the recommendation.

We shop at Lidl or Aldi, apart from eggs and spuds which come from the farm gate. Generally spend about £30 a week, £35 if there's something special we really fancy.

We quite often eat separatly due to shifts, tonight I'm having half a big can of Lidl's Chilli (big can for £1.79 that I can have two or three meals out of) and rice (50p a kilo), a muller yogurt (under £2 for 6) and one of their own mars bars (25p). So that's a meal for about £1.50 tops. Can't fault the quality on their fruit and veg, I'd say it's the rival of any of the posher supermarket, although availability can be a bit hit and miss.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

    Ocado
    • upfront cost of Smart Pass, but if used regularly can save more than pass cost so effectively getting free delivery
    • bigger range of Waitrose and Ocado own brand, major brand and artisanal stuff exclusive to Ocado plus stuff from USA, France, Sweden, Spain that you would otherwise have to try to source from delis.
    • free slots at unpopular times
    • promise to beat Tesco branded prices
    Waitrose
    • free delivery all the time on orders over $50
    • price match to Tesco except offers
    • myWaitrose card gives you offers occasionally eg free coffee, free newspaper.
Using www.mysupermarket.co.uk you could bulk buy products you have on price alert from ASDA, Ocado, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose.

You might find using other supermarkets doesn't save you as much as you hope because of delivery or parking charges.

If you go to Aldi, Iceland, Lidl, Morrisons, Poundland etc you should take Ocado on the Go and compare prices. Quality is trial and error. You'll find some good products in Lidl and Sainsbury's, less so in ASDA and Morrisons.

A tin of chilli, a fructose laden yogurt and a Mars bar is hardly a healthy dinner ! Depends whether you are desperate to save money at all costs I guess.

Making your own food from scratch could be v healthy though. The price of food shopping drops dramatically if you buy ingredients rather than processed foods; stock up whilst they are on offer and freeze for convenience.

I am always shocked at how much people are prepared to pay for fruit & veg at the major 4 supermarkets, when there are cheaper ways of sourcing it.

I love love love ocado. I buy the groupon vouchers (via quidco/tcb) when they do their "£50 free shopping plus six month free delivery for £45" offers. ;)

I CBA trogging around 6 different shops, most of which are over 8 miles drive from me. Their food is consistently good, rarely have issues or substitutions, and well priced. There are some things I bulk but from costco though once every 4-6 weeks.

I suppose I average £45 a week on food for 2 adults and a toddler. We tend to eat more protein than the average so that bumps it up a bit.

  • £40 on average. I think it's never too much on food.

We spend about £40/50 for 2 adults and 2 large cats.

We don't have Aldi, Lidl or Asda within easy distance but have excellent local shops and markets. We get PYO in the summer and freeze lots. Our local Farm Shop does PYO raspberries for £5.50 a kg, they are large and flavoursome and freeze well.
