Expat Pensions: Finding a pension while living abroad

Options
Hello all.

I'm totally new to all this so any info is much appreciated!

Does any one have experience or advice on planning for their pensions as an British expat?

I have been living and working in Germany for over 10 years and with time ticking by I really must start looking at starting up a private pension!

At this stage of my career though I really can't say where I would be eventually retiring, it could be the UK, Germany or perhaps somewhere else altogether.

Are there any kind of Private Pension schemes (in the UK or elsewhere) designed for expats that are more independent of where you happen to be living for tax etc?

many thanks!

I have been living in Germany for nearly 14 years so can share with you what I know - send me a PM.

Well, just some other things to think about, if you haven't already:
    • Find out how much German pension you've accumulated by working within that social-security/tax system, because this will help identify any potential income shortfall in retirement
    • Consider buying years in the British state pension system via voluntary National Insurance payments. This can be especially valuable if one's contribution record in the UK is just under the threshold required to get any British state pension.

  • Hello all,

Thanks very much for the quick and useful answers. Certainly some things to start looking into there on the offshore pension ideas and also good to know about the voluntary NI contributions.

    Many thanks.
