You're not kidding. Yes it's my own fault i'm on the warning, but i've received my punishment.

We all make mistakes, most of us will have been here at some point in our lives.

Every single day, before i speak, before i do or don't do i have to ask myself - can i get into trouble for this. I can't take ANY chances. It's no exaggeration - every minute is walking on eggshells. I can't afford to take any chances as one slip up lands me without a job.

This isn't healthy for you to be living on edge like this. Seriously, I would be looking for another job you need to get away from this. It sounds like you are like a sitting duck waiting to put a foot wrong and be fired. A dismissal on your record isn't good - nor is having a dismissal as a last reference.

It happens all the time in winter. In a few weeks or a month or so we expect it to pick up & then in summer it goes crazy.

The rota has now been scrapped. The accusation was that our department can't work together, so we will get told last minute on a Friday as to what we're doing at the weekend. Our contract says we're expected to work Monday-Saturday, between xx:xx & xx:xx, so basically we're to be available throughout.
This week was the final week with a rota.

So, what happens now? Do they mave a meeting with all staff on a Friday about the weekend cover? That might make it clearer to everyone?

Agree with Ribena's comments about the co-worker. Sounds to me like he/she is giving you the ammunition to get yourself fired.
  • The co-worker has no reason to contact you are you aren't in work.
    They actually do.

The supervisor told them to contact me & tell me i'm supposed to be in work.

This co-worker is 1 of only 2 people at work who i will give my mobile number to as there's only 2 people i can trust not to give it out. I know my supervisor would just misuse it for a start. There's no good reason for any of them to have my mobile number - they have my house number & there's always someone here. I'm always contactable. If he needs to contact me he could've gone to the office & asked them to do it, but he chose to instruct another worker to contact me as this worker refused to give out my mobile number.

It was lucky i was going to the gym, otherwise it wouldn't have been very pleasant being woken up at 7am on your day off!!
The co-worker needs to stop contacting you as they are just playing into the
    supervisor's hands.
They were following an instruction which they thought/assumed was a reasonable request. If it wasn't then co-worker wasn't aware of this.
Is the supervisor your actual manager?
Yes. Supervisor/foreman/line manager, however it's termed. This person is my direct manager. He comes under the general manager who comes under the boss.

    No, no meeting.

What will happen is my supervisor will go see management at lastminute.com on a Friday night, get the instruction as to who is working & who is not & then come & inform us. We then have to do as we're told.

Who in work said this? The boss & HR (who draw up the rota (or rather, did)).

Regards co-worker - without going too into detail, i can trust this co-workers word 100%.You'll just have to believe me on that i'm afraid. If this co-worker said the supervisor kicked off, then the supervisor kicked off. This co-worker wouldn't lie to me (i understand you'll say that they could, but you'll just have to trust/believe me).

Supervisor had told me the rota HAD changed to me working. 5 minutes later, the boss & HR told me to my face that this wasn't the case.

5 minutes after this i tell the supervisor who grumbles that HR 'lied' to him then but at that point seemed to accept i was off.

Who exactly is your main boss here? Or manager? Seems boss and HR tell you one thing but over ride Supervisor.

As HR and boss I'm guessing gave you final warning (what for by the way?) then you take orders re your Rota from them.

    Also ignore coworker 100%!

a - your co-worker should tell the supervisor that if they want to contact you, to call you themselves. No way should a member of staff contact another member of staff to tell them to be in when they are not in - that's what the 'supervise' in 'supervisor' means.

b - if you are being asked to come in by your supervisor directly, then why is their manager and HR over-ruling them? Are they not reading who should be in or not in from some rota?

  • So the rota had you down as OFF this week.
    Correct
In subsequent weeks you'll be told you're off (or not) on Friday.
    Correct
At the point you're advised this, either way you're not expected to be in until Monday. Simples.
    Correct.

So when you're contacted on Saturday basically saying why are you at home you should be in, it's not very pleasant.

To put another view on this ........ if my slate was clean & i wasn't on a warning, i wouldn't have panicked at all. In fact i may not have even called the boss as i was convinced i was off. I can't answer that for sure as i wasn't in THAT position. I may have called the boss still to just double check, who knows. I do know i certainly wouldn't have panicked at all as at worst i'd have got a warning. Even then i would've fought it after being told i was off.
However as i'm on a final warning, that changed everything in my eyes. Alarm bells went & i was thinking that's me done for. Not a very nice feeling let me tell you.

Ah didn't see this. Well I'd ask for more notice not Friday night.

As you have a home number can't everyone just use that? No mobiles and how/who has yours without permission.
  • If the shifts arent given in a group and there are no witnesses I wonder if a little diary might come in use here.

Keep a record of the shifts your given, when and by who - also record the shifts you work. Make sure the supervisor see's you writing down these shifts and if there is any come back from management then you have your diary.

Might also be useful to record any instructions from co-workers via supervisor - just incase this gets ugly.

  • However as i'm on a final warning, that changed everything in my eyes. Alarm bells went & i was thinking that's me done for. Not a very nice feeling let me tell you.

So you only panicked when your co-worker contacted you? You supervisor hasn't contacted you at all? And the Management AND HR have both confirmed that you are not in this weekend?

I'd be photographing the rota or recording the conversation with them each and every time...and I'd be doing it 'for my own memory purposes in case I get a call this weekend to remind myself what was said'.

    Confused.com!

Really OP needs to tell HR to get details straight etc with supervisor, give proper notice re working and also details re phone numbers to use or not.

Seems like everyone there doesn't know their posterior from their elbow and OP rightly is getting panicky everytime he's told a different work rota/pattern.
