Some advice if possible please

Options
Some years ago my partner opted out of serps in favour of a company private pension plan, she was advised that this would be in her best interest. Her employment and contributions continued in this way until the company ceased trading a couple of years ago, she was made redundant, but had paid into the plan for around 18 years.
There then followed 6 months on jobseekers allowance until she found a new job, albeit only 20 hours per week.
She will be 58 this year and now things have settled we have started to tie up a few loose ends. Needless to say we have no idea about pensions whatsoever.
We're assuming she will still be opted out of serps, where do the pension part of her NI contributions go? and would she better off opting back into serps, if this is at all possible.
As stated above, neither of us has the first idea about pensions and ultimately we will need to seek advice from an IFA, but hoped there may be some here that could at least help with some basic advice. Thanks for any help:o

Contracting out of SERPS ( or S2P as it's now known) has been abolished since April 2012 for all but final salary pensions. If your partner was not automtatically contracted back in on leaving her employment, she will be as from last April anyway.
