3 years minimum, 5 year tops should be a sensible repacement plan, depending on the needs of your usage.
If your talking actual lifiespan of the hardware then it depends on the manufacturer. Some old machines have been running since the 70s I believe!

I had a packard bell desktop, purchased Jan 2000, finally gave up all hope with it Oct 2006, then replaced this with Acer Aspire 5040 (£400) laptop and emachines desktop (approx £250) for children to use, have been really pleased with both, so far!
(We only use them for basic internet browsing, printing/storing files & photos, and don't tend to download.)
Both also have cd/dvd rw

I have a genuine IBM 8086 from the early 80's which still boots up
eventually...........:D
These days a a machine is out of date within 3 years so it will need replacing or will seem very slow as new more graphic and memory hungry applications appear.
Dell are great value for the money, not very expandable but if you buy one with a 3 to 5 year ownership cycle in mind then total cost of ownership is about as low as you will get.0 -

I have had three Dells now and find them excellent quality. Look for the special deals that pop up from time to time. Alanobrien is quite right in saying they are not very expandable, but if you are like me and just want to browse the net, use Word and play the odd game they are more than adequate.0
