Hi
Not sure if anyone knows the answer but thought it was worth a try until I can phone Acas .
My contract says I have to give a months notice but my employer only has to give me a week.
Is that correct ? doesnt seem fair to me !
Thanks in advance

It may not be "fair" in the normal, commonplace, way of thinking but it is legal.
On the other hand, after you have been there two full years, the employer would legally have to give you at least two weeks' notice. The notice they have to give increases for each complete year of service - up to a maximum statutory time of 12 weeks.
Unless your contract says otherwise, the notice you have to give does not increase.0 -
Thanks that what I am reading0

To be fair to the OP, they may not have been made aware of that term until they had been in post for a couple of months.
If they had wanted to resign before being made aware of it, then of course they would have needed to give no more than one week's notice.0 -

Thanks for your help. I didn't get a contract for about 3 months into my post , in fact i do not have a copy now. I didnt get a copy back after i signed it .
I work for a small company where things are not done as they would be in bigger organizations. One of my colleagues was offered a job and when she had been working for a month they put her hourly rate down !0 -
My contract says the same, 1 months notice, I think its common and yes it is unfair, but what happens in our place is when you hand in you notice 9 times out of 10 your out of their on the same day, the boss doesn't want to risk anyone messing about so just lets them go on the same day.0
