How much is too much on a cv

Hi all,

I am redoing my CV as I am leaving my current job. I have done alot of different jobs all ended due to temporary contracts or longer term contracts ending. The last one I was off sick for a long time so we chose to end the contract but I am now able to return to work.

My only problem is listing all my jobs my CV is 6 A4 pages long which I feel is way to much for an employer to look at? Would anyone suggest what can be on there what shouldn't be on there how many years employment should be on there etc I am 26 but I have been working since i was 13.

I am aiming for a high salary job so just would like some advice :)

  • What do you mean a high salary job? £30k or £130k?

Unless you need a specifically long one where there is established practice or a certain industry (i.e. lawyers or very experienced senior personnel) then 2 pages should be more than enough, especially for someone your age.

If it is much longer than this then you are not trying hard enough to be selective. Unless you have run a string of your own businesses then I don't think there would be any call for 6 pages.

Normally I would expect to see no more than 2 pages of A4, 3 pages at the most. I would never read 6 pages of any CV for any role.
  • Hi Everyone,

The job going for is 50,000 which i think is quite high for my age and always done a full cv and now i feel as a adult and for role going into little is better I wanted to reduce it but I wanted to make sure this is right thing to do mainly because i know things are all different now when it comes to cv's I will adjust it to less than 2 and just put what they need to know does anyone know any good CV builder sites that are free? I just want to make sure give best impression possible.
  • For that kind of role it should be a skills based CV rather than an historic one.

2 pages should be plenty, 3 at a stretch but 2 will teach you to make the most of the space on a CV!!

I landed my £50k job at your age with a 2 pager although the CV only got me an interview - that is where the test really begins.

Send a 6 page CV in and it will to straight in the bin. It shows you can't be succinct and can't identify the critical information.

2 pages max and the first half of the first page will determine whether you will get invited for interview.

What qualifications do you have that will make a £50k job likely?

No offense OP, but you would do well to use proper sentences and punctuation on your CV, unlike in your postings here. Especially if you are applying for jobs in the 50K salary band.

Unless you're in science/academia, then a 6-page CV is a fail; 2 pages is the norm.

  • I too have done alot of temp jobs, my first lot of jobs were of better quality than what i have been doing in the last three years but because they are older than 5 years and what i already have on my cv has already filled my cv i feel i must insert this info somewhere to at least record that i had done some other more credible jobs.
