List of businesses found in lay-bys

Hi Everyone,

I am thinking of starting up a food van, & I have spotted a few different layby locations that may be good for a fast food van, but I was wondering what other types of businesses are good for lay-bys as there's loads of food vans about? I've already thought about different types of food (rather than the usual burgers & butties), so I am after completely different non-related ideas.

If you were setting up in a layby, what would you sell???

Any help would be appreciated. Once upon a time you used to see greengrocers & florists in lay-bys, but those days seem to have gone.

As these outlets are licenced by the council, it may be worth asking them what type of business they would allow to trade from the lay-bys.
  • Good idea, I figured that if I thought of different ideas that was viable, I could then see if I can get a layby location to suit.

You just don't seem to see other types of businesses operating in lay-bys nowadays. All those cars passing every minute of the day, they must be some type of business out there that would make them stop other than food.

  • That's the one drawback of a food van. You need to set up really early to catch the breakfast eaters, then you don't get finished lunch until 2-3ish. How does anyone last that long without needing the loo.

FYI - Road traders around my area are being hit with taxes by the council so suddenly are having to find several thousand pounds for this year up til April and then continue paying that rate from now on. Quite a few have packed up and moved on or just stopped working because of it - it just makes it that much harder to make money for them.

Its worth checking what your local council charge road traders and factoring that in from the start!

Really!!!! I didn't know that, I enquired about a year ago & it seemed quite a cheap option, so I definetely need more up to date info just to make sure.

Dont forget there's also trading estates but again I imagine there might be taxes involved and permission to be there. Ive seen a few on different trading estates.
