A friend of mine requires a little help, ive searched google but cant find a simple answer.
Ok, a friend works in a department store and thinks its odd that things have happened with viewing of some CCTV. Now I think its against the law to view or monitor or operate a CCTV system in a department store if you do not have a SIA CCTV operators licence, is this correct.
Basically, can a security guard go looking through CCTV footage, or operate the system if he does not have a CCTV licence (SIA)

You do require a SIA licence to operate a cctv system, but I am unsure if a security guard can just go and look at footage.0

As far as I am aware you don't need a licence to view CCTV footage. If I'm wrong, I'd love to know the legislation that specifies you must be qualified because my company and everyone else on this business park are breaking the law because we all love to have a good nosey at the night-time activies our cameras pickup!!You had me at your proper use of "you're".0

An SIA licence is required if you undertake the licensable activities of a public space surveillance (CCTV) operative and your services are supplied for the purposes of or in connection with any contract to a consumer.

This is where I need a simple answer.
Can a SIA licenced security guard, who does not have a SIA CCTV operators licence, operate and view CCTV data? live and non live events such as viewing events happening in a store, then viewing the footage at a later date? Is there any Data protection law that says any individual in a public store must have a licence to operate and view footage. All the big powers they've silenced me. There are two seperate qualification for security and CCTV operator but the SIA would be the best people to ask.0

I would imagine anyone could view the image as long as they aren't actually controlling the cameras.
For example a store manager more than likely isn't SIA registered but may view the cctv everyday, the police not SIA registered so they view footage quite regular too. So i guess you only need licensing to operate a cctv system.0 -
