Is 47 too old for a career change

I'm thinking of going to college to train as an hairdresser.

You are only as old as the woman you feel!

47 on the outside but 18 at heart, go for it. This type of job has no age limitations, however its a dog eat dog business, but who says you cant go self employed?

I would say No its not, I spent over 20 years working in the Shipping industry and retrained at 38 to a digital engineer with Sky tv

    Good luck :)
  • You won't be too old but expect customers to naturally prefer a younger hairdresser when visiting.

Look at it this way: if you work til retirement at 65 thats 18 years left to go. LOADS of time for a new career :D

BUT- talking from experience, unless you want to do beauty therapy as well, don't do full time college, look for an apprenticeship in a salon with day release to college - you'll learn more, learn faster and learn more modern techniques than colleges are teaching.

Toni & Guy do fantastic aprenticeships.

Also expect people to naturally want you as a more mature hairdresser

I disagree, I prefer an older hairdresser, and im in my twenties. Beware though- families will expect free hair cuts forever! lol.

Life is too short- do what makes you happy. :)

Let's just say sex sells, and for a hairdresser people naturally expect an attractive young lady there. There's a reason people go for hairdressers rather than a barber.

Utter bullocks! You're on another planet mate. Planet Troll perhaps?

The main reason people go to a hairdresser is to GET THEIR HAIR CUT!!! I don't know anyone who visits all the salons in the area to assessment the attractiveness of the staff before booking an appointment!
