Renting after bankruptcy

Went bankrupt 2010 and discharged 2011. Family living in a rented property. Desperately need to move to a bigger house as overcrowded. Getting nowhere on council waiting list, so would like to rent privately. Have been advised, that because of having being bankrupt in the past, the only way we can get a house is either by having a guarantor (no one willing), or stumping up 6 months rent in advance. Is this truly the ONLY options possible?

it really depends on the agent the landlord uses, i rented a few times immediatly after bankruptcy and never once was it brought up. i know some off them say they will do a credit check but i think the rarely do. dont bring it up unless asked and you will probably be fine. :)

    Hi,

I am currently moving from one rented property to another. I am in court tomorrow regarding my BR and I have always told the potential landlord as they carry out a credit check (so will know anyway).

Everyone of them has told me that being bankrupt won't affect the final decision as it is just to confirm my identy and that I work etc etc.

They do mention a guarantor will be required even though i have 18 months proof showing I have always paid my rent in full and on time.

They said it was incase they needed to claim for any damage that I wouldnt be able to pay so I can understand why they need one. Can you not get a close friend to guarantor?

As long as you can pay the rent and dont wreck the place it wont affect them in any way.

I was renting when bankrupt and rented another property 2 years after going bankrupt with no issues. I did mention to the landlady when I met her and she had no issues with it, she just said everyone has a past. I never had to stump up more than one months deposit and one month in advance which is the norm. Good luck.
