Employer cancelling annual leave

This is a hypothetical situation at the moment but I want to be prepared in case it becomes a reality due to workload and staff shortages.

I have 3 weeks of annual leave which were booked and approved over 6 months ago with my manager signing the dates off on my leave sheet. We have a holiday booked with flights, car hire and a number of hotels all paid up in advance.

Could my employer cancel my leave and if they do are the liable to compensate me for the money paid for the holiday. Would they only give me my share, what about the flight for my OH as obviously he wouldn't go on holiday without me.

No sure about compensation but if you have 3 weeks booked they have to give you 6 weeks notice if they want to cancel it

Thanks, holiday is not until later in the year so they still have time to cancel as I can't see the staff shortages problem going away in the near future.

Why staff shortages? People have left and not been replaced?

Yes, we have a recruitment ban at the moment so nobody can be be replaced when the leave.

Thats the companies problem not yours but they can cancel the holiday but not stop you from taking your entitlement in the holiday year.

I know, but it could potentially leave us about £1500 out of pocket:(

If the holiday has already been granted and they then cancel it then they have to compensate you but I'm not sure they will have to compensate your oh too.

If i was in your position I will take the holiday regardless, surely they can bring in agency cover it will be cheaper for them to that then compensate you.and what would they do if you went off sick. Don't worry it not your problem and look forward to your holiday I know I am 5 weeks and counting.
