2002, at least that was the first time I didn't have enough money to pay off my credit cards, so I got a 0% & did a BT then got a 0% and spent on it, several 0% deals later, I was struggling to pay the minimum payments. Still, now I'm on track and should (other than my mortgage) be virtually out of debt by around this time next year. Then I'm not going to be so stupid again, and I'll save up for things rather than getting them on credit. I doubt I'll go back to buying 'stuff' to cheer myself up, because, in the long run, it doesn't. Live & learn!
  • I have been in debt for the last 20 years, since I was 18. I am going to be debt free by my 40th birthday, 2008.Then I will start on my mortgage.

I suppose it must be 10 years or therabout, in various degrees, never more than last year when I took a good look at my spending, mostly online gambling, I took the decision just before last Xmas that I had to stop and do something about it. I am managing to pay all of my debts without skinning myself but it's a terrible feeling knowing that I can't just go out and buy what I want, or think that if something unexpected crops up I will have to go in more debt. I am really looking forward to being debt free and I must thank this forum for helping me get to grips with my life.
My target for this year is to pay off my last CC and reduce my loan as much as poosible

Our debt started when we sold our first house with negative equity back in the early 90s, and it slowly got worse.

Started tackling it a year ago, albeit slowly due to job loss.
Is it better to aim for the stars and hit a tree or aim for a tree and land in its branches

    Debt-free and Proud!
We got into debt just over 2 years ago, until that time we did have credit cards, but ALWAYS paid the balance in full every month, there was never more than £150 on them,we didn't have loans or store cards, only a mortgage.
When we realised that we were not getting our money back,we panicked and thought we would lose everything and have to go bankrupt,I was directed to this site just over a year ago,had some wonderful support and advice and started the ball rolling for paying the debts back,at the moment we will be 93 years old when debt free, but we are hoping to double our payments to Payplan and get debt free much sooner :) hopefully berfore we die LOL
    Debt at highest £102k

Both me and my hubby have been in debt since we were 18 (26 & 23 now). Mine was manageable until the breakdown of a previous relationship and has spiralled since then. Hubby's was down to bad decision over car finance and has spiralled since.

We have been tackling our debts on and off for 5 years, but by trying to avoid paying much so we could enjoy life instead. However, towards the end of last year it started to dawn on us that we were not enjoying life as we still never had any money, and the debt was still there and not moving anywhere fast. So, we finally had our LBM in March 07 and should be debt free in 2 years

    Since I was 18! <sigh>

In November 2005 I thought  "Why am I so credit rich but cash poor? Why do I struggle to buy a pint of milk but I could buy a car if I wanted?"

Think I was about £18500 in debt when I sat and worked it all out.

And so it began...the whittling down process!

I now owe.....around £13100 give or take twenty quid.
I'm very much hoping to be debt free by 2010...a year before I hit the big 4-0.
Bank Balance: In the black for the moment.
    Sainsburys Loan: Cleared July 2010
Credit cards: AMEX Airmiles Card: direct debit set to clear balance monthly
