If someone is dismissed without notice due to redundancy (store closing down) and has not been paid any wages since mid January, might they be entitled to claim a tax rebate for the 2012-2013 tax year if they do not work for the remainder of this tax year?
Basic rate tax payer aged 54, no savings/other income, living alone, salary of £13K a year.

Absolutely - it works out at about £31 per week from the date that you ceased on the assumption that:
a) you paid sufficient tax from April
b) you are a basic rate taxpayer.
Both of the above would appear to apply to you.0 -

Thanks nomunnofun. Would they contact the tax office now or need to wait till after April 5th?
Could you possibly explain how you arrive at the £31 a week please?0 -
Are you signing on for jobseekers allowance?0

Is there any reason to believe that you wont find another job before April 5th then.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Its for a friend. She did initially sign on last week for JSA but has been taken to hospital today and will be kept in for a few weeks at least according to the doctor.
I think she will claim ESA now in place of the JSA
McKneff, she definitely will not be working before April 5th0 -

If you are signed on for jobseekers then any rebate due is paid when you sign off or after the tax year ends whichever comes first. You should give your P45 into the Jobcentre. I have no idea how this would be affected by changing to ESA.0 -
She should be able to claim any rebate after the end of the present tax year. I did mine over the phone with no problem at all. They had my P45 to hand, My P60 from personal pension and state pension details in front of them. They said I was due a refund but it had to go to the calculations dept but I already had it worked out to within a couple of pounds anyway so I knew how much to expect.
I retired one August but because I had a small company pension and state pension I had to wait till the following April. It was sorted in a few weeks.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Unfortunately because I am old enough to remember 'repay allowances' while in HMRC. Your personal allowance for the year is 8105. If you did not have this allowance you would pay an extra £1621 per annum (20% of 8105) This equates to £31 per week. Therefore, every week that you do not use this allowance (and bear in mind what the other posters have said since) will result in a refund of that amount.0 -
Thanks Chris, McKneff and nomunnofun. She needs every penny she can get right now.0
