Difficult eyesight prescription, please help

Hi,

my mother has quite a bad astigmatism on her prescription, this is:

Right Sph: +0.50
Right Cyl: -6.00
Right Axis: 20

Left Sph: 0.00
Left Cyl: -6.00
Left Axis: 165

Noticeably the Cylinder is -6.0, the last time my mum bought specs she went to a high street opticians who said because of the strength of the astigmatism she had to buy "special glasses and lenses" that cost £400 (note, not designer frames). Her glasses are now broken and she will struggle to pay this sort of money again. I've been to a couple of online opticians but the Cylinder choice only goes to -4.0, so I'm a bit stuck.

Anyone know where to go to get a prescrition like this without paying big bucks?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

I'm not sure where you would get glasses for much cheaper. The best high street optician I have used for glasses is Specsavers, as they have the 2 for 1 offer, but if you need thinned out lenses on the second pair, etc, you still need to pay for the extras, so may end up costing more.

Maybe you could try an independent optician in your area. It all depends on the lens suppliers prices really, and if these are specialist lenses then unfortunately there may be no option except to pay.

asda seem to be one of the cheaper high street opticians at the moment.
My OH works in a lot of different opticians specsavers, asda, boots etc.... and always get his from asda as they are the best value. A lot of things you pay extra from at specsavers come as standard at asda.
Not sure where you are but the ladies at ASDA Derby (Spondon) were fab when I went in with my mil to help her choose her specs.

Thanks for this, I had a look but Asda only do a prescription of -5, better than the -4 of the main websites though.

I don't know where you are but in Liverpool we've got St Pauls, a specialist eye hospital, if you have anything similar get in touch and ask advice, or even phone Liverpool, ir's part of the Royal now.

My CYL is -10.50 in both eyes and I need new lenses - £400 without frames, or £540 for thinner but heavier glass lenses. If your mum's lenses are not damaged could she buy a new pair of identical frames and have them refitted?

Alternatively, try emailing Ciliary Blue - on their website they don't go up to -6 but they may be able to help offline.
  • Many thanks for all the relies, some useful leads...

    Morning,

I checked with my OH last night and he suggested contacting some local independent opticians and asking if they deal with Norville.

Or maybe even contact Norville yourself. Not sure if you can buy direct from them, but they should be able to tell you who stocks their glasses in your local area.

Just found their website for you...

  • With that sort of cyl its not worth the potential for hassle by scrimping and buying cheap. The slightest error in positioning of the lenses and they will be useless, definitely NOT on-line.

She doesnt HAVE to buy the top of the range thinned though, with clever frame choice she could cut alot of the thickness down.

head to your local opticians and chat with the dispensing optician, explain your budget and get them to go from there,

also consider getting a bupa plan or alike - they may help with the costs,
