Meal break tax allowance question

Hi, I work on the railway and recently we found out that we could get a £500 allowance per year on our tax for meals taken away from our depot (every day). Some colleagues have received money for the last four years ranging between £400-£800 and have had their tax allowance for the year raised by £500. Now though the tax man is saying no to the allowance and no to the rebate. How come half of my colleagues doing the same job will now be better off and will have already banked a cheque, the rest will not! Thanks if anybody has a definitive answer,

How did you find out about the allowance, was it from your employer / union or word of mouth around the canteen.
Chances are some people will have claimed, been successful and this has provoked more claims, this has then caught the attention of inspectors at HMRC who will have seen a large amount of claims for people working for one employer, and these are now been scrutinised closely.
Has yours been rejected, if so did it give a reason on the letter? He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0
