What kind of size are they as the words swede and turnip seem to be interchangeable words describing totally different root veg, depending on what part of the country you live in? What craigywv and I are thinking of as turnip sounds from your description like what we would call swede here....

They keep for ages in the fridge so you probably don't need to use them immediately. In the meantime these threads may give you some ideas:

    What to do with turnips...

    Turnip/Swede?

Whats the difference between a turnip and a swede?

I'll add your thread to one of those links later, and there are more links that I can dig out if you would like me to.

Thanks, I still think turnip. You get them in stew packs round here.
Cream /white in colour and often put in casserole. Only trouble is ...I do not need a casserole.
Now if they were swede, would have a orange colour when cooked. I could put that in the steamer. Do mash and swede.

I bought the stew pack veg as whoopsies.

Use it to top a fish pie or cottage pie.

  • Nippy Neep Soup
    1 onion, diced
    1 clove of garlic, crushed
1 inch piece of ginger, peeled & finely chopped
Half a small red or green chilli, chopped & deseeded.
1 large neep (swede for the English, a turnip for the Scottish) peeled & chopped
    2 carrots, diced
1 teaspoon each of garam masala, tumeric and ground cumin
    1 litre of vegetable stock
    Olive oil

Heat some olive oil in a large pot. Gently fry the onions, ginger & garlic for a few minutes. Add the carrots & allow to soften for a few more minutes. Add the spices, and stir and coat the vegetables. Add the diced neep and add 1 litre of stock. Bring to a simmer & cover for 25 minutes. Blend completely & serve.
