"It is estimated that more than 95% of all the [STRIKE]silver[/STRIKE] coal ever mined throughout history has already been used and is gone forever and unrecoverable at any price."

People should get hoarding coal before it's gone forever!

I'm thinking of selling my house and buying coal, unlike silver, at least I can burn it to keep warm :)
    I think....

Its quite easy to see if the price rises are justified or not.

Simply compare them to profit levels.

eg. centrica's profits went up faster than the price rises meaning the price rises were not entirely cost driven. So not justified unless of course you are a shareholder of centrica.

What I know about centrica will make people's blood vessels burst as I know someone who works there and it isnt pretty.

With wholesale and retail arms and vertical integration we just don't know how much they make either.

I have thought about becoming a shareholder. Fairly stable divi at 5%+ potential for capital appreciation.

  • Now, I don't mind prices rising, if the need is geniune. But how genuine is it?

I saw a presentation this week that was discussing the Energy needs of the world.
    Some interesting snapshots: -

It is expected that the world population will increase from 6.5 Billion to 8.3 Billion by 2030

There will be an 85% growth in middle class accross Asia by 2030

Electricity demand is expected to be up 75% by 2030

Water demand is expected to increase by 54% by 2030

    CO2 emmissions to increase 35% by 2030

All this is highlighting the increase in demand expected. The question is, what are we doing with the supply to meet this demand.

Interestingly for me, ahead of the Electricity and Gas demand is the water demand increase.

  • There's only one reason energy prices are going up and that is the disastrous policy decisions that were made resulting in the Climate Change Act. I think people are only just beginning to have a inkling as to the consequences of this policy but we'll certainly be well aware in 5 years time.

This is a factor but I think the real reasons for such high inflation in utilities is all the money printing going around the world especially in the UK. Talk of another £175 BILLION just being typed into the B.O.E bank account and they can spend it on whatever they want. This is a lot more units of currency being added to the supply out of thin air chasing the same amount of goods and services.

The government want to make the official inflation figures seem lower then they are, so this inflation energy has to go somewhere, just try and keep it away from the basket of goods and services they use to measure official fudged inflation numbers.

What on earth are you on about? Energy prices are included in the inflation indices. And talking about money being created by QE is meaningless without the context of shrinking bank balance sheets and credit destruction.

    I'm still not buying silver.

Bang on and the reality is the era of cheap fuel has gone. With demand worldwide we are going to have to pay more for gas, electric, and petrol. The quicker folk accept it and get used to it the better.

Been saying this for years but people always seem to be amazed when prices hike up. With China and India requiring more and more energy, prices only have one way to go.

...and those people who are constantly surprised by rises are always telling us that it can only get worse.

However, woe betide anyone that suggests monitoring energy use with the aim of reducing bills or, worse, insulation. It's bizarre because I think these people spend a bigger proportion of income on utilities than those advocating making savings.

I think the time has come to start rewarding those , who have taken measures to reduce consumption through insulation, boilers etc positively. Reduced tariffs perhaps?
