Is there anyone that can give me advice about registering as self employed? Are there penalties to pay if you don't register within a certain time of starting up?

To register you can simply phone HMRC or do it online via their website.
The old £100 fine for not registering within 3 months has been dropped, instead penalties are simply for late payment of NIC and/ or return of Self Assessment and that is dependent on how much is owed and how late it is done0
