help needed re washing voiles

HELP.... I got some lovely cream voiles for in my livingroom..
I always wash new ones before putting them up, it states on the label 40 degree wash.

so to be on the safe side I washed them at 30 degrees, but they've come out all crinkly..so much so they look crumpled and untidy..

but I cant iron them in the normal manner, I tried at a cool temp.. but because they have this thin shiny thread running throughout them it pulls v.easily.

so please help I want them bk to normal un-crinkled:)

If they are new, and you have the receipt, take them back as not fit for purpose.

It's possible that they are large curtains and handwashing or washing in a larger machine would have prevented this; but I would take them back.

I always wash things like this with no spin, hang out to drip dry and then hang back up damp to dry.
  • I didn't dry them as I usually hang them up damp.. and they went in the wash on their own..

    Here you go

"Voile is a soft, sheer fabric, usually made of 100% cotton or cotton blends including linen or polyester. The term comes from French, and means veil. Because of its light weight, the fabric is mostly used in soft furnishing. Full-length curtains in hot countries are made with voile and used as window treatments, mosquito nets etc. When used as curtain material they are similar to net curtains".

I'm sure I've heard about spraying fabric condition onto crinkly fabric to help the creases fall out. Maybe I'm thinking of another fabric though as I can't find anything on Google! You can apparently buy a spray that helps release creases though.

You could possibly iron it underneath another piece of fabric, so the heat is not directly on the voile - this article mentions using a 'press cloth' in this way http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_6072453_wrinkles-out-voile.html

Ours seem to hang out fine, though since they're only for the back door to give a bit more privacy, I can't say I pay that much attention to what they look like!

  • Yes--iron them under what is called a "press cloth" really just another piece of fabric--a pillow case or the like will do as long as it is clean and preferably white/washed many many times so no colour will transfer.

Or a large white hanky or tea towel will do as well.

Before that I`d dunk them in some warm water in the sink or bath, depending on the size, then let them drip dry overnight to try and get some of the creases out first.
