New UPVc windows

I consider myself pretty savvy about diy and usually do all my own work,However, I needed to have some new windows fitted in a rental property that I own and as the original windows were sliding sash, I took a lot of trouble finding the right manufacturer and got him to recommend a local, independant guy who would supply and fit a couple of windows, plus a large bay and a composite door. Met the guy on site, and chatted through exactly what I wanted, gave him the oportunity to turn the job down if he wasn't happy about doing the work. Fortunately, as his quote was a bit basic I printed out the exact specification of the works, etc and sent it off to him along with the acceptance of his quote. a few weeks later he phoned to say all was ready to be fitted and we arranged a date to commence the work. I met with his on commencement, and checked on the progress over the next few days. Problems started on day one, and to cut a long story short, almost every window is miles out of vertical, resulting in gaps and draughts, the composite door is out of true and does not close properly. So bad was the work that the tenant( lady) pointed out the defects herself!! When the defects were brought to his attention he would just bluster and try and explain things away. Eventually, I got really tough, and sent him a recorded letter, outlining all the defects and rejecting the windows and door.
It was the total lack of any professionalism and his thinking that I couldn't use a spirit level that really got me. The upshot is that I have not paid him anything - & I will not until the whole thing is put right. Today, he has turned up with the intention of taking out all the windows and door and refitting them. Why do these people not take the trouble to do the job properly? I guess that this is a lesson learned - don't take anything for granted.Put everything on paper & don't pay the b****rs anything if you don't get what you asked for.I don't hold out much hope that this won't end up in court.
