The earlier car thread has got me wondering, is there a general rule of thumb of how much discount off the advertised price of a 2nd hand car is reasonable to expect? From a dealer, rather than private seller? Thanks in advance.

Dont go by discount, go by the price relative to other cars in the market - of which there are plenty and prices will vary greatly.
I'd rather have £100 off a car at £9000, than £1000 off the same car at a different dealer but advertised at £9995.0 -
Most car dealers mark up their prices to allow for a trade-in
a lot of people over value their own cars, if they think they are getting a high price for their own car they will do a deal quicker!
If you have no trade-in a discount is always available.
The amount of discount will vary with the availability/desirability of the model on sale

Not really. No.
It will vary based on many factors.- How much profit the dealer has to work with
- How much profit the dealer is prepared to give away as discount
- How long the dealer has had the car
- How much he wants to move the car on at that particular time
- How much discount the dealer has already offered by advertising it at the price he has
- How hard you negotiate
