Reclaiming Travel Expenses?? Temporary place of work

Hi all
Please can somebody advise me as to whether or not I am entitled to claim anything back.
My Scenario:
I have an office 20 miles from where I live from where I organise activities for kids with support needs. Once arranged I can spend approx 5 weeks out of the office supporting the kids. Then back to the office to arrange more etc etc.
I am paid travel expenses for any journey I undertake either from my first destination that day if less than 20 miles, or the first 20 miles of any trip is discounted. e.g.
My first appointment for the day may be 10 miles away, I go there first, anything after is business mileage.
My first appointment is 35 miles away, I deduct the 20 miles to my office and claim the 15 as travel expenses.
After reading HMRC 490 booklet I am wondering if I should be entitled to claim the whole trip. From home to first appointment as business mileage as it is a temporary place of work?
Even if my employer does not pay that am i entitled to somehow claim back the tax on the fuel I use for the 20 (40 round trip) miles which I do not get paid expenses for?
490 booklet is slightly confusing does anybody have anything I can take to my employer to either evidence an expense claim or to request help with a tax claim.
