Working for a UK company but resident abroad?

Hello all,

I promise I've searched this forum for any similar issues, but can't find anything, and wonder if anyone can give me advice on this situation which may soon arise for me.

There's a possibility I may be offered a job by a UK company (I am currently self-employed). I am a UK resident myself but am spending a lot of time abroad (in one country on the European mainland) and thinking of taking residency in this country. The job I may be offered is one I would do "remotely", so I wouldn't actually be physically present in the UK for much of the time.

My question is about income tax - I know the UK has a Double Taxation Treaty with this country, but I'm not sure what would happen:
a) if I became resident here but was still employed by the UK company, where (i.e. to which country) would I pay tax?;
b) if I took this job on as a contract and remained self-employed (not sure the company would go for this, but they might, but would I run into IR35 problems??), where would I pay tax?
c) if I wanted to stay as flexible as possible with where I wanted to be physically present (I might move somewhere else in the world) and therefore avoided changing residency for as long as is legal...

Also, do I have any choice at all in these matters - can I make choices to do with residency, etc, to pay as little tax as possible (avoidance not evasion)?

Anyway I have a feeling I need professional advice but would love it if someone was able to give me an idea here!

Thanks
HFM
