House with damp

Hi all,
I have been looking at house which is rather cheap because it needs damp proofing walls and floors and updating. Would be still possible to get a mortgage for a house that needs damp proofing or will they say no chance.

Basically, it will depends on the valuer's (surveyor) comments. Is the damp due to old or non-existent damp proof course, leaky roof or a combination of problems? Are we talking remedial work or full scale renovation?

If the property is habitable at the moment and only requires remedial work, then it should be possible to mortgage, but be prepared for a retention (a part of your mortgage borrowing held back) until the work is completed and re-inspected.
