why am I asked to fill in a self assessment form?

Hi

Was wondering if I have anything to go back with for HMRC on this one.

Every year I receive the self assessment reminder and constantly ask why am I being asked to fill this in... I think the reason is because I had my own business and maybe that could be the trigger but it no longer exists.

Approx 9 years ago me and a friend began our own IT business up, we created ourselves a limited company, went to companies house to register the business, setup a simple business account and then traded for approx 1 year before I decided it wasn't for me and pulled out. I then filled in the required form to pull myself out of directorship and shortly afterwards my friend did the same and the business ceased.

The year or year after I then started to receive instructions for filling in self assessment forms because I was a director of a limited company and held a full time job. I filled this in without questions for that year but every year since then I have received self asssesment forms to fill in.

I phoned HMRC and spoke to a representative and said when I fill in the form every year a lot of it I can't fill in as it doesn't apply to me anymore, I have also informed them they the business no longer exists and queried why I need to be filling in the SA form.

The represantative did agree that it didnt seem like I needed to fill in a SA form and said he would make a note on my file so I dont receive it the following years but I still do receive it.

My current situation is I have a full time job with no additional second job, I am not a home owner, I have a few savings accounts/ISAs and thats really it.

Is there any way I can find out if I do need to be filling out an SA form yearly? I really dont think I do but dont know where to begin.

Many Thanks
