I'm so sorry Saturnalia. I really thought the job had your name written on it. :( An hour or so before you finish Friday, are you able to ask for feedback about why you didn't get it? Then if you are upset you haven't got too long to wait till you can go home. Don't burn your bridges though just in case.

I was going to ask for feedback but the manager who sent the e-mail was out of the office Thurs & Fri. I was told that is her style - does something unprofessional and rude then lies low for a couple of days.

She is disliked anyway but this incident has caused uproar around the office. No-one can understand why I wasn't hired and they are disgusted with how I was told. People I don't know all that well were stopping at my desk and telling me they were shocked and sorry about what happened! They have said unanimously that even if the company decided not to hire me, they should have treated me with decency and taken me to one side to tell me so. But again, they can't understand why I wasn't picked in the first place.

Well, it is done. I've just got to get on with it, again. I'm trying to convince myself that I wouldn't want to work for a company that treats people like that. But in reality, I'd put up with just about anything for a regular livable wage and a routine. And there are people there I really like. The job isn't perfect, but in reality how many people do enjoy their jobs?

But it has come as a nice surprise to find out how well-liked I am among my colleagues and other staff. I'm not used to being popular so it was surprising when so many people came out in support of me. And even better, so many have asked for my e-mail and said they will let me know if they hear of similar jobs elsewhere. So you never know what might come of it.

I spoke to my consultant at my agency today to ask her if she had had any feedback from the company. She hasn't, they just told her that they had interviewed someone else and given her the job. She said they had originally asked for me on a week-to-week temp basis for 12 weeks before going permanent, so she doesn't understand why the plan changed either.

I told her about how I'd found out I lost the job, and she isn't impressed either. It turns out the company phoned her today to ask if I was free for a half-day next Monday, and she said she'd understand if I didn't want to go back there. But I have taken it. It's £50 I can't afford to turn down and maybe I'll get the chance to speak to that manager, and I'll get to catch up with all the others I do like. And I won't feel any embarrassment at all going in there, as everyone is on my side!

In the meantime, I'll be redoubling my efforts to find work and signing up to other agencies that place temp-to-perm staff, as mine is at finding me short-term temping but nothing more permanent. I'd like to hope the company will realise too late what they have lost when I'm not their "good little temp" any more *evil grin*

    way to go Saturnalia.

Its a sad story for you. Maybe you could have done more to earn what you deserve. Maybe they are just cruel and you do not deserve them.

I hope you the best in your next job.

I just remembered Saturnalia - many years ago I was temping on a contract (turned out to be a year) in purchasing department of factory/manufacturers, which employed, oooh 300 employees.

Well I was there a year (covering maternity leave for purchasing secretary) and my work record was impeccable. I was told I was *accurate to a T*, and I rarely took time off even when my father died, although we weren't close, my parents divorced many years ago.

Anyhoo, a receptionist (2 of them) position came up - they'd made the older receptionists redundant after many years, and they had a new MD in who wanted to revamp the place. Anyway, I was told to apply, I did. The HR manager mentioned I wasn't 'Miss UK' (I am pretty, so have been told!) and I was slightly put off by the beauty queen type and references he made sexism. (this was in interview with HR manager). They employed 2 people, seemed to be nice, a bit dim one of them was and I left. Now that firm's bust, well was bought out and business transferred abroad.

I guess I had thought, naively or not that I'd been there so long the job *was mine*. But I got back on the horse and got another job so it wasn't so bad.

And yes, not the agency in your case (luckily!) but the company probably has taken you for granted. someone will see your true potential soon and you'll land a plum job. good luck. :)
