Dressmakers/bridal shops - HELP!

Options
I went to see a dressmaker today, as I thought it could be cheaper to get one made specially, rather than pay an extortionate amount for a dress then an extortionate amount to make it fit (as I'm rather short) - but seemed horrendously expensive!!

Can anyone offer any advice??

Is anyone on here a dressmaker - would you suggest to buy a standard dress for cheaper online then have it altered?

Thanks

  • I got a mark lesley dress second hand off ebay. Its costing me 150 for cleaning, steaming, boning removed, bustle lift, hem shortening, and some beadwork. It all depends on the dress. Detailed around the bottom are going to be more expenaive to shorten. I went to bridal shops tried loads on found the one i ljked then wajted for it on ebay

Depending on the time you have then check the shops often a dress costing around £1,000 could be as low as £150 in a sale or clearance and a good shop will be able to do alterations for you for a very small cost.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
  • I went to the Wedding Dress Factory Outlet in Leicestershire and got a brand new beautiful wedding dress for £300. I think they also have a branch in London as well if that helps.

Getting a bespoke dress made is expensie, because it requires a lot of time measuring, sourcing fabric, making & fitting.
It amazes me that people think they can have a dress similar to one they've seen in a shop cheaper if they get a one off made expecially for them.
I have a friend who made my dress, and she say's she feels insulted when people ask her why her prices are so high.
